World Smile Day was created in 1999 by the smiley face-creating artist Harvey Ball in the hopes that we could devote one day each year to smiles and kind acts throughout the world. Harvey Ball is my kind of man. What the world needs more of right now is definitely smiles and kindness, and I am happy to participate in World Smile Day, doing what I can to help spread cheer on the first Friday in October.
There are a million little ways that you can contribute to the good of happiness on this day, from lending a smile of your own to a stranger or friend in need, to paying for an extra coffee in the drive-through at Starbucks so the person behind you has a free surprise. When it comes to kindness, any way you choose to play, everyone wins.
Those of you who know me know that my favorite quote is directly related to this type of kindness and merry-making. “If you don’t have a smile, I’ll give you one of mine,” has been a personal mantra since I was a kid. It is something I try to keep in mind on all days, but today I will take it a step further and perform acts of kindness that benefit strangers as well as friends and family.
Check out the website for World Smile Day, Like their page on Facebook, and pledge your intention to be a World Smile Day Ambassador. It’s a simple way to enhance your mood while spreading kindness to those around you. I’d love to hear how your own World Smile Day goes!
Please stop by and share your own good deeds or those that others performed to make you smile. Let’s make the world a better place, one smile at a time!
