I’m not the first person to say it and won’t be the last, but boy, weight is so easy to put on and so difficult to take off! Welcome back to Mind Over Mouth Monday where I am chronicling my weight-loss journey. The first month of the year has been pretty successful for me overall. My goal on Weight Watchers is to try to take off a sensible 1-2 pounds per week, and for the month of January I am down 6.2 pounds. Although it doesn’t seem like much in a month I feel like it is sustainable and realistic. I’m making better food and exercise choices every day and I believe those choices are what will keep me healthy going forward.
Going into my weigh-in this week I was so not looking forward to the number that the scale was going to reveal. I had a rough week as far as keeping my points in check and didn’t exercise nearly as much as I had hoped to. I just knew that those three extra beers I indulged in over the week were going to show up on the scale as extra weight. So what did I do? I pondered not going to weigh-in at all. After all, if I don’t step on the scale and log the weight, then it never happened, right? Besides, if I don’t weigh in, then I have one more week to try to take off the damage!
In the end I wised up, knowing that avoiding the scale is a terrible idea, even if I think I’ll see a gain. The only way to stop the madness before it begins is to know where you stand. Knowing is half the battle! I let my wiser side win out and stepped on the scale…..to find that I had lost weight! All of that drama and avoidance was for nothing in the end. Even better, I managed to somehow sidestep any damage the extra weekly indulgences might have imparted. In the end I am down in weight and still on my way.
As for exercise, I’m doing well! I actually kind of enjoy my treadmill workouts and am getting a little kick out of beating my old stats along the way. I have started the Couch-to-5K program and am slowly introducing running to my routine. Right now I can confidently run 90 seconds at a time, interspersed with 90 seconds of walking, for about 30-40 minutes. Yes, I still have a long way to go, but I am making some serious progress!
Moving forward this week I have a big challenge ahead of me- Super Bowl Sunday. I enjoy football and I enjoy a party, so we are hosting a big Super Bowl shindig for family and friends. We are doing it on a Mexican Fiesta theme, which in hindsight is not the best idea for someone on a diet. Mexican food is decidedly NOT diet-friendly! I’ve prepared the best I can by stocking up on low-point beer and making sure we have some fruit salad and vegetables on the menu. I’m confident that with a little willpower I’ll be able to stay relatively on track while still enjoying the game time fare with my guests.
Until next time!
