I recently joined a new Facebook group for bloggers called Blogger’s Corner and have been introduced to some very wonderful sites. Patricia, who blogs at One Lemon at a Time did a post answering six blogging questions that were a great introduction to new readers. In the spirit of sharing I am answering the same six questions and encouraging fellow bloggers to do the same!
Blogger’s name and why you chose it?
The title of my blog now is Refreshingly Riki-Miss Riki’s Musings, but it wasn’t always that way. I started out with the title Musings on Hope and Hopelessness, but after a while I found that I needed something more upbeat to reflect the actual content of my blog (see below for the change in content). I was having the hardest time coming up with names for the blog, so I put it out there to my friends on Facebook. My friend Julie came up with Refreshingly Riki and I loved it!
Why did you start blogging and what is your blog about now?
I started blogging initially to sort out painful feelings stemming from mental illness. I began blogging privately as a sort of therapy and began to slowly publish my writing. As I worked through that dark time in my life my posts began to move away from mental illness and personal struggle and more towards hope and other things that I was filling my life with.
My blog is now a somewhat eclectic mix of things ranging from health and wellbeing to reading and writing. I do regular posts about freewriting and monthly book reviews, as well as an ongoing feature called Thankful Thursdays where I wax poetic about things that make me happy in life. I also have an ongoing thread called Mind Over Mouth Mondays where I am chronicling my weight-loss journey. Mixed in are posts about things that generally interest me. As you can see, I write about a lot of things, but I try to keep topics on assigned days to help even out the experience.
Introduce your family.
I am blessed to have a wonderful close-knit family that keeps me motivated and inspired. My parents and my grandparents live very close by, and my extended family is near enough that I see them a few times a year. In addition to the people I have a wonderful cat named Ernie that I would definitely consider a member of the family.
What are your hobbies?
My hobbies are very arts and entertainment related. I am an avid reader and will pick up just about anything in print. I’m currently addicted to my iPad, where I can be reading several books and magazines at the same time and not have to carry them all with me. I also do a lot of writing. My dream is to complete a novel and I am dabbling in learning to write poetry, although being in school full-time leaves me very little time for writing creatively. Aside from blogging I get very little free time. I dream of being out of school so that I can focus my creativity purely on my own writing.
I am also a musician. I have played the flute and piccolo for nearly 25 years and am a member of two wonderful groups. I play with the Ahwatukee Foothills Community Band and the Arizona Wind Symphony. Music has always been an outlet for me and I am rarely happier than when I am making music.
What are your aims and inspirations for your blog?
My inspiration for my blog is to expand my blogging repertoire. I enjoy writing about my community and the things going on in my life, but would like to be able to do it more regularly and include more creative writing components. I love the bogging community where I receive feedback on my writing and would like to use it more effectively to learn and grow.
Where do you see your blog next year, 2 years from now, 5 years from now?
In the next year I see my blog as it is currently. I am in my last year of coursework at Arizona State University and understand my time constraints as a full-time student. I unfortunately don’t see a lot of free time to expand on the blog as it is now. In two to five years I would love to see a more consistent posting schedule and expanded content base. I find that when I blog consistently a few times per week, my traffic increases significantly, and I would love to offer my readers more constant content.
Thanks to Patricia for the inspiration and questions. I look forward to hearing the answers from my fellow bloggers!
