I’m super excited today to be a part of Ashley Poston’s Blog Tour for THE SOUND OF US! There’s so much to share, including all the details for the book, my own review, a giveaway, and….an exclusive interview with the author herself! So, sit back and get to know Ashley Poston and THE SOUND OF US!
The Sound of Us by Ashley Poston
America’s favorite pop band, Roman Holiday, is done, dead, and so totally last year. For eighteen-year-old rockoholic Junie Baltimore, this is music to her ears. But when she discovers their sexy ex-lead singer hiding out on the boardwalk, her summer vacation becomes the cover story of the year.
She’s willing to keep him a secret, but when a sleazy paparazzo offers her the cash she needs to save the bar her father left behind, could she sell out for the chance to save her future? Who is she kidding? That’s a no-brainer…but she never planned on falling head over heels for the lead singer.
Miss Riki’s Review:
I loved this novel! What a rocking, fun ride!
Junie is the type of girl that you totally want to be friends with. She’s equal parts sweet and sassy, and best of all, she’s not totally enamored with the band Roman Holiday when she fatefully meets the lead singer. And oh, Roman! He’s a hot mess of emotions and thwarted motivations, but he’s tender with Junie and I loved their sweet attraction to one another.
The book has a wonderful feel of nostalgia as Junie returns to the place she’s spent summers her whole life, with carnivals, street vendors, and dive bars. Thanks to her lively best friend Maggie, there’s a ton of wonderful pop culture references that somehow fit the story at every turn. If you love music and pop culture, you’ll absolutely love The Sound of Us.
With so much of New Adult centering on tough, dark themes and bad boy love interests, The Sound of Us has a refreshing lightness to the story. There’s definitely some drama in the book, but the tone remains light throughout.
I highly recommend The Sound of Us for a sweet romance, wonderful depiction of female friendship, and lighthearted feel.
Interview with Ashley Poston:
Hi! Thank you for having me on your blog! I really appreciate it! 🙂
Describe yourself in five words.
A ginger casually being weird.
What is the best piece of advice have you ever received in your writing career?
When I was in college, an English professor of mine once said, “If someone isn’t invested enough to love or hate your words, you’re doing it wrong.” That’s the best piece of advice I ever received because I find it very, very true. I would rather a reader love or hate my work, than to not feel anything at all, because at least I know then that I did something right (or incredibly wrong).
What was your favorite part of writing THE SOUND OF US?
The soundtrack, definitely! The book is chalked full of music references, so being able to put together a playlist that coincides with the book was pretty fabulous. It’s on Spotify if you want to check it out! The Sound of Us (Radio Hearts #1)
DREAM CAST: Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character(s) from THE SOUND OF US?
Aaah I love this question so much! I’m a very visual person, so before I ever start a draft or begin editing, I always make a wallpaper of what my ‘characters’ look like.
Roman Montgomery – Miles Teller
Junie Baltimore – Kaya Scodelario
Boaz – Mark Salling
Maggie – Danielle Brooks
Caspian – Colton Hayes
Geoff – Diego Boneta
What is an unknown fact or fun trivia about THE SOUND OF US?
In one of the earlier drafts, instead of working at her father’s bar, Junie was a baker who specialized in lemon tarts. And there were a lot of lemon puns.
E-Books or Traditional Paper Books?
Well since I’m with Bloomsbury Spark, and e-book only imprint, I have to say ebook. (But we all secretly know my heart is with paperback. It’s the smell. You can never forget the smell of a freshly-printed book.)
What’s Next: What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on the second in the series after THE SOUND OF US. It’s called WE OWN THE NIGHT. I pitched it to my editor as Sleepless in Seattle meets Rebel Wilson. You can find out more about it here on GoodReads! https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22901217-we-own-the-night
Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?
THE SOUND OF US is a really special book to me—not just because it’s my debut, it’s also my ode to live music. I wanted to write a book about concerts. About guitar rifts searing across your heart strings and drum solos rattling your ribcage. I wanted to write a book that didn’t hinge on a playboy rockstar’s tragic past or the main character’s attraction to him. I wanted to know what would happen if you took a nerd-turned-popstar, killed his best friend, and sent him home. I wanted to know what would happen if you took a girl who would rather see her own future go up in flames than to fail her late father’s bar, and forced her away from her comfort zone. I wanted to write a story about friends, about coming together, about red suspenders and ice cream and how music heals wounds you never even knew you had. So, I really like THE SOUND OF US, and I hope you will, too.
