The year is 1771, and war is coming. Jamie Fraser’s wife tells him so. Little as he wishes to, he must believe it, for hers is a gift of dreadful prophecy—a time-traveler’s certain knowledge. Claire’s unique view of the future has brought him both danger and deliverance in the past; her knowledge of the oncoming revolution is a flickering torch that may light his way through the perilous years ahead—or ignite a conflagration that will leave their lives in ashes.
Miss Riki’s Review:
*sigh* I absolutely adore these books! I have to admit that even as an avid reader, I was intimidated by the 1400+ pages of this book, but any fears I might have had going in that it might not sustain itself were immediately erased by the opening scenes and emotional depth of the book. I read some reviews that said the novel was meandering and in desperate need of editing, but I was captivated from page one and devoured this book in a little under a week.
The Fiery Cross is everything Gabaldon fans have come to love from this series. It is both deeply emotional and highly riveting, with plenty of high action to sustain the less dramatic depictions of day-to-day life on Fraser’s Ridge. In this novel we really see the relationships taking center stage, in Jamie and Claire as well as Brianna and Roger.
We see Claire in all her healing glory, with lots of unusual medical dramas popping up throughout the book (and for me these are some of the best parts of the novels- seeing Claire in medical action.) There’s no rest for the weary with infected tonsils, gangrene, and the matter of a very disturbing snakebite to tend to. And that’s just a few of the medical moments! As for Jamie, this novel depicts him in his element, leading his people and being the leader he was born to be. Seeing these two characters living their own lives and being independent of one another in such a profound way really beings meaning to their relationship when they are alone together, and fans of the timeless romance won’t be disappointed. There’s still this wonderful, slow burn of passion between Claire and Jamie, and the chemistry between them has never been more palpable.
I equally loved getting deeper into the relationship between Brianna and Roger, and in this novel, their romance is put to the test many times over, deepening their connection and enthralling the reader. I loved the descriptions and Brianna as a mother to wee Jemmy and also seeing Roger come into his own as a man of the household. Their storyline is riveting.
Don’t be discouraged by the length of this novel! It moves quickly and is packed with action and intrigue. I can’t wait to move on to the next installment!
