Budding designer Lola Nolan doesn’t believe in fashion…she believes in costume. The more expressive the outfit—more sparkly, more fun, more wild—the better. But even though Lola’s style is outrageous, she’s a devoted daughter and friend with some big plans for the future. And everything is pretty perfect (right down to her hot rocker boyfriend) until the dreaded Bell twins, Calliope and Cricket, return to the neighborhood.
When Cricket—a gifted inventor—steps out from his twin sister’s shadow and back into Lola’s life, she must finally reconcile a lifetime of feelings for the boy next door.
Miss Riki’s Review:
I cannot stop grinning after reading this book. I fell in love with Stephanie Perkins’ love stories with ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS and couldn’t wait to get started on this story. It absolutely holds up to the high standard she has set for YA romance.
What stood out to me the most in this book is the undeniable chemistry between Lola and Cricket. The two of them are so darned cute together and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that Cricket isn’t your “typical” YA love interest. He’s quirky and adorable and just the right fit for Lola. Lola herself is quirky too, but in the best possible way. She’s got interests and loves outside of her adoration for Cricket and I felt her pain in being torn between a boy she thinks she loves and the one who is right for her.
Something else I love about Stephanie Perkins is her ability to write fully realized and complete secondary characters. Sure, I fell in love with Lola and Cricket, but I also loved her parents, Andy and Nathan, and Cricket’s sister, Calliope.
As if Lola’s story wasn’t enough- there’s cameo appearances from Anna and St. Claire from ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS, and I absolutely love the way their stories blended together. It is so well done!
If you’re looking for the very best in lighthearted YA romance, be sure to get your hands on this book. It is everything you could possibly hope for.
