It’s been SO long since I’ve checked in with all of you and let you know what’s been going on, and so much has happened! Here goes!
What I’m Writing:
In case you missed it, I completed my first novel, THAT YEAR earlier this year and have put the manuscript though several rounds of revisions. But the crazy pants thing about writing a book is that just when you think a manuscript is finished, you receive valuable reader feedback that tells you it’s just not quite ready yet, and back to the drawing board you go. So- that’s where I’m at right now. I recently received some incredible feedback that has me back in revisions on THAT YEAR, and I’m super excited about where this book is going. Revisions are hard, but sort of fun too, so I’m not totally upset to be back at it.
Besides my main project, I’m also busy writing a column for LitReactor and contributing weekly to Writer Diaries. I absolutely love the vibrant online writing community and am having a blast contributing to various sites on the web.
What I’m Reading:
My next column for LitReactor is going to be a roundup of Young Adult Boarding School novels, so I’m currently working my way through a stack of those to get ready. I just finished reading WINGER by Andrew Smith and was absolutely blown away by how good it was. I also loved Libba Bray’s A GREAT AND TERRIBLE BEAUTY. Next up is NEVER LET ME GO by Kazuo Ishiguro. Needless to say, I’m really loving this assignment. So many great books!
What I’m Listening To:
I’ve found that while I absolutely love drafting to music, during revisions I don’t rely on it as much. I sort of need the quiet to work through the details, so I haven’t been listening to a lot of new and inspiring music. I do, however listen to my THAT YEAR playlist to get me in the mood for revising. Doing so drops me right into the mood and mindset I need.
What’s Inspiring Me:
I guess I should really say WHO is inspiring me! I have an amazing writing partner named Kelly who continuously amazes me with her incredible imagination, and this week I am inspired by her. Not only is she writing the most amazing new manuscript that has me dying to read the next chapter, but good things are happening for her in her writing life, and it’s making me excited all over again. Go, Kelly, go!
This week is all about the revisions! I’m currently hammering out a reverse outline of THAT YEAR to work from, and I’m hoping to have some things fleshed out this week that have been stumping me. Forward progress is the name of the game!
