I’m so pleased to have author Kate Scott on the blog today! She is the author of the delightful novel, COUNTING TO D and has been kind enough to stop by for an interview. Check out my review of the book and settle in for a little Q&A!
Please describe yourself in five words.
Imaginative, thoughtful, adventurous, playful, geeky.
What is the best piece of writing advice you have received in your career?
What was your favorite part about writing COUNTING TO D?
Getting to know the characters.
Which actor/actress can you envision playing your lead characters from COUNTING TO D?
I didn’t have any specific actors in mind while writing it. But if I were hired as a casting director, I’d probably pick Ariel Winter to play Samantha and Logan Lerman to play Nate. So Ariel and Logan, if you’re looking for a new project and want to pitch a great book to some producers…
What is an unknown fact or fun trivia about COUNTING TO D?
While most of the Portland landmarks sighted in this book are real places, Kennedy High is not. Just as all the characters are fictitious, they also go to a fictitious high school, which may or may not be located in exactly the same spot as Lincoln High School. But Kennedy is not Lincoln, I swear. This book is fiction.
COUNTING TO D is printed in a type that is more easily read by those readers with dyslexia. What prompted you to write about a protagonist with dyslexia?
I am dyslexic, intelligent, and adept at navigating the literate world without actually reading. Despite having a lot in common with every other real-life dyslexic I know, I’ve never related to fictitious dyslexic characters. For decades, I waited for somebody to come along and provide a more accurate account of a relatively common condition, but it never happened. So I got tired of waiting and wrote it myself.
Do you prefer E-Books or Traditional Paper Books?
I prefer audiobooks, but since that wasn’t an option, I’ll say e-books. They’re lighter and more convenient. I like paper books, too, but I tend to read more e-books.
What are you working on now?
My second novel, which is called The Evolution of Emily. It will be out in early 2015, and it’s also set at Kennedy High. Sam reappears as a minor character. Also, Miles comes back with a much larger role in Emily’s story. I totally love writing about Miles. He’s such a fun character. There is a super cute new boy named August, too.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
It’s okay to be unique. Hopefully, your readers already know that, but if they’ve forgotten, I’ll remind them again. Never be afraid to be yourself.
Thank you for the opportunity to feature you and your book!
