I’ve decided to implement a new feature here at Refreshingly Riki in the form of a weekly check-in where we can discuss what’s new and exciting about our current reading and writing. I’ll be sharing what’s going on here with me and look forward to hearing what’s new with you!
What I’m Writing:
I’m a few chapters into my first Young Adult novel, tentatively titled That Year. I was just accepted into the 2014 Your Novel Year Certificate Program at Arizona State University and am going to be spending most of my writing time working on my novel. There is coursework to be written as well, so I’m working on that too!
What I’m Reading:
I’m about halfway through Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz and am loving it! His sparse writing style is easy to read yet somehow full of raw emotion. I highly recommend it, and my review will be coming soon!
What I’m Listening To:
I’m currently scouting songs for my novel writing playlist. Right now I’ve selected tunes from Brandi Carlile and David Gray and am seeking songs that speak to me about my characters and subject matter. It’s an important playlist that will hopefully inspire!
What’s Inspiring Me:
I’m currently on a vacation in beautiful Rocky Point, Mexico, so my inspiration is coming from the beachside view I’m enjoying every day. I’m trying to soak in every sunny day and pink sunset. I’ve found that I’ve been exceptionally productive here by the water and am already planning my next trip!
This week I’m aiming to get some more quality work done on my WIP and complete my assignments for the writing program. As far as reading goes, I’m finally going to have the chance to dive into Veronica Roth’s Insurgent and Allegiant and cannot wait to find out how that series ends! Vacation is an excellent time not just to get writing done, but to escape into the worlds of my favorite authors as well.
