I’ve always been a big fan of words and writing and was thinking back to when I really started to get excited about both. I have been a voracious reader since the day I picked up my first book and have kept a journal since my junior high days. As far as my reading goes, I haven’t been exposed to a whole lot of poetry, but one of my favorite word groupings happens to be an old children’s rhyme that I memorized for class when I was in the third grade. I’m not sure why, but it has stuck with me after all these years and I still remember standing up in front of the class to recite it.
Moses supposes his toeses are roses,
But Moses supposes erroneously,
For nobody’s toeses are posies of roses,
As Moses supposes his toeses to be.
At the time the word erroneously caused me a bit of consternation and a good look in the dictionary, but I managed to pronounce it correctly and have been enchanted by the word ever since. Thus my love for big words began to grow. To this day I keep a growing list of words that I love close at hand. Whenever I hear a word that brings me joy, I jot it down on the list for future reference.
Do you have a favorite poem or saying from childhood? What favorite words have stuck with you through the years?
