MY TRUE LOVE GAVE TO ME is a delightful collection of stories that encompass a wide variety of styles and tones, and it is sure to make you smile this Christmas.
Instead of doing just another book review, I’ve teamed up with writer and blogger extraordinaire, Kelly DeVos to bring you the My True Love Gave to Me Holiday Spirit Awards! We awarded winers in six superlative categories that feature the very best of this wonderful anthology. I am featuring three here on Miss Riki, and Kelly is featuring the other three over at Insanity Today!
So, be sure to check out our winners below, along with my mini-review of MY TRUE LOVE GAVE TO ME! Enjoy!
My True Love Gave to Me Holiday Spirit Awards:
The Sweetest Kiss
And Miss Riki’s winner is… Noel & Mags from “Midnights”
There is nothing I love better than a sweet friends-to-lovers romance, and this kiss was everything I could have dreamed it would be. These two characters captured my heart from page one, and left me dreaming of a full novel featuring them both! (Ahem…Rainbow Rowell…)
And Kelly’s winner is… Noel & Mags from “Midnights”
I totally agree with Riki on this one. Rainbow Rowell’s “Midnights” is a super-sweet story that accomplishes a lot in just 22 pages. I loved the development of the relationship between Noel and Mags and the kiss at the end is both subtle and romantic.
Best Use of a Magical Element
And Miss Riki’s winner is… “The Lady and the Fox”
This story is full of secrets and magic that really captured everything I love about the holiday season. It’s quite atmospheric and maybe even a little dark. Fennick is a wonderful character!
And Kelly’s winner is… “The Lady and the Fox”
Again, I have to agree. Kelly Link’s story is probably my favorite from the book. To me it felt like a modern Great Expectation. I loved the Fennick character and how he sort of personifies holiday magic.
And Miss Riki’s winner is… Shy and Haley in “Angels in the Snow”
This was my favorite story in the anthology, mostly because I just loved Shy so much! He’s a little bit jaded and a lot out of the holiday spirit, but meeting Haley changes everything. They’re just so darned sweet together, and for me the “meet-cute” extends past their initial adorable meeting and into every interaction they have together.
And Kelly’s winner is… Marigold and North in “It’s A Yuletide Miracle, Charlie Brown”
I could really relate to Stephanie Perkins’ story. Like Marigold, I would totally love to spend my days roaming around the Christmas Tree lot. In this this story, there’s a pretty simple meet-cute (Marigold runs into North) but I think the tension and pacing that lead up to it as just so great.
Miss Riki’s Review:
This collection of short stories written by some of the best names in Young Adult literature is a bag of mixed goodies. Inside you’ll find gems by authors like Stephanie Perkins, Holly Black, Rainbow Rowell, and David Levithan. While each story is centered on the holiday season and does feature a romance, they are each unique and as varied as can be. You’ll be pleased to find a diverse collection, featuring a myriad of races, religions, ethnicities, and sexual orientations.
Since each story stands alone, you’re free to dip in and enjoy these twelve holiday romances in any order you like, and they’re short enough to spend just a cup of hot cocoa or two on each one. Whether you read them one at a time or delve in for the whole book, you’re sure to find the perfect story to get you in the holiday spirit.
Among my favorites were MIDNIGHTS by Rainbow Rowell (OMG- these characters are so darned cute!), THE LADY AND THE FOX by Kelly Link (magical!), and ANGELS IN THE SNOW by Matt de la Peña (I fell in love with the protagonist!)
This is the perfect book for easing into the holidays, from Christmas Eve to New Year’s Day.
